Student Police Call Taker Program
BC RCMP offers a unique job experience for college and university students to work in a police environment and work alongside 9-1-1 Police Dispatchers in a dynamic workplace.
Choosing to participate in the Student Police Call Taker Program may be one of the most rewarding decisions you will make. The position offers many opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Student Police Call Takers are scheduled to work fulltime from May to September. Students receive eight weeks of training before they begin answering non-emergency calls for police assistance. Students are assigned a field coach to support them through the training program.
When to Apply
The application period for the 2024 Student Police Call Taker Training Program year closed on October 20, 2023. We will no longer be accepting requests to attend a Student Career Presentation or application packages.
The evaluation of applicants for the 2025 Student Police Call Taker Training Program will begin in September 2024.
Work Locations
9-1-1 Police Dispatch Centres operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Student Police Call Takers will be scheduled to work various shifts including a rotation of day shifts, afternoon shifts and night shifts.
The Student Police Call Taker Program is offered in three RCMP 9-1-1 Police Dispatch Centre locations in British Columbia:
- North District – Prince George, BC
- Southeast District – Kelowna, BC
- BC RCMP Headquarters – Surrey, BC
Salary
The rate of pay for a first year Student Police Call Taker is $32.84 per hour.
Prerequisites
Residence in British Columbia
BC RCMP is recruiting students who reside in British Columbia. Only applications from this area of selection will be considered.
To be considered for a Student Police Call Taker position, you must:
- Be a Canadian Citizen or have permanent resident status in Canada.
If you are applying to a 9-1-1 Police Dispatch Centre in Courtenay, Kelowna or Prince George, you must have:- Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status in Canada
- Resided (been physically present) in Canada for the last 5 years
- Canadian citizenship
- Resided (been physically present) in Canada for the last 10 years
- Possess a Canadian secondary school (high school) diploma, or a satisfactory score on the General Competency Test: Level 1 (GCT 1-207) - Canada.ca.
- Be a student registered at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
- Be proficient in English.

The first step in the Student Police Call Taker Application Process is to attend a Student Career Presentation. This information session offers you the chance to hear first-hand from our Recruiters about the exciting opportunity to work as a Student Police Call Taker in the summer. You will also receive information about the requirements and expectations for the Application Process.

You are required to attend a Student Career Presentation before submitting your application to the 9-1-1 Police Dispatch Recruitment Team.

- Skill Testing
- Panel Interview
- Suitability
- Security Investigation and Medical Assessment
Training
The two-year Student Police Call Taker Program consists of classroom, online and on-the-job training. During the first year, Student Police Call Takers will provide non-emergency services to the public and the police. During the second year of training, Student 9-1-1 Police Call Takers will receive training to respond to emergency calls for police assistance.
Student Police Call Takers who complete the call taking course are eligible to register for the dispatch course and complete the RCMP’s training program. If successful, candidates will be offered fulltime employment and may be eligible for appointment to an indeterminate position.
