Kootenay River Secondary School turned into a volleyball haven on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. The Sr. Boys and Girls volleyball teams challenged the local first responders to a ‘friendly’ game and Grad Fundraiser. Creston RCMP, BC Conservation Service, and Creston Fire Rescue formed a ragtag first responder team to face off against the Sr. teams.

The team of first responders put up a good fight. They started off their first game with the Sr. Girls, and quickly scored the first couple points. However, their hope of being competitive was quickly crushed, as the Sr. Girls kicked into gear and quickly disposed of the ragtag group in straight sets.

The first responders then played the Sr. Boys, who had just come back from the BC High School Provincial Championship Tournament. The first responders put up a valiant effort, with a couple big blocks in the second game. But in the end, the Sr. Boys overwhelmed them, and the first responders were once again disposed of in straights sets.

We had a great time supporting our grads. It was fun to play with our partners and spend time with the youth in our community. We all got into these professions to make a difference, and being here with the high school students gives us the opportunity to build relationships with our community’s youth, says Cst. Brett Urano, Creston RCMP Media Relations Officer.

It brings great pride to see my officers and our partner agencies continually come together in support of youth in our communities. I’d like to congratulate our Sr. teams for showing our first responders how the sport of volleyball is actually supposed to be played, said S/Sgt Brandon Buliziuk, Creston RCMP Commander.

The event was capped off with a Sr. Boys and Sr. Girls game. There was a great turnout, and it was amazing to see the school spirit, as well as the community’s support at this fun event that raised over $300 for our grads.
