File # 2023-04-25

The Merritt RCMP wish to remind motorists of their obligation to stop for School buses, that have their flashing Lights activated and their stop signs displayed.  That all vehicles must stop regardless of their direction of travel.

Our local school buses in the Nicola Valley are equipped with high definition Cameras. Should you fail to stop for the School bus, expect to receive some Action from a local RCMP officer. The officer will serve you with a high quality photo/video of your vehicle along with a violation ticket. The fine amount is $368.00 and 3 penalty points. The video is several of these incidents is so clear that it often allows police to identify the driver.

Cpl. Brock Hedrick said, "I'd like to remind motorists to slow down around schools and buses, no matter the circumstances.  Our children deserve nothing less"

It should be noted that the driver does not need to be determined for a charge to be laid. The Registered Owner can be charged with this offence as they are ultimately responsible for the vehicle under the B.C Motor Vehicle Act.

If anyone has any questions about stopping for school buses or any other questions in relation to the Motor Vehicle Act, please reach out to the Merritt RCMP at (250) 378-4262.
