File # 2022-5496
The Merritt RCMP was contacted early on the morning of November 18, 2022 for a possible shots-fired complaint in the 2100 block of Priest avenue in Merritt. Merritt RCMP members immediate attended the scene and believe the shooting to have been targeted.
The callers identified a distinctive mid 90’s grey Dodge Ram pickup with a maroon box in the area at the time of the shooting. The truck then fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
Shortly after the reports of the shooting, a complaint of a truck on fire was received. The burning vehicle, a Dodge Ram, matched the description provided by witnesses of the suspect vehicle from the shooting. This truck was later determined to have been stolen earlier in the morning. Investigators believe that the vehicle was stolen at approximately 5:30a.m.
We strongly believe that this incident is associated to the ongoing investigation to the shooting that occurred earlier this week
said Merritt RCMP A/Commander Sgt Josh Roda Fortunately there have been no reports of injuries from the shooting, and investigators are continuing their tireless efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects in these brazen events. Investigators continue to canvass the area for witnesses and residential video
It’s believed that the truck was stolen solely for the purpose of the shooting, then it was dumped and burned near the Highway 5 and Highway 5a on-ramp at an area known as the Goedy Creek pit.
Roda added.
The Merritt RCMP are urging local businesses and residents to review any surveillance video that may have captured the theft of the truck, the shooting, or the dumping and burning of the truck. The evidence you may have could be crucial to identifying the suspect(s)
There are the following locations where video provided is requested;
- 1700 block of Granite ave, Merritt (theft of truck scene)
- 2100 block of Priest ave, Merritt (shots fired scene)
- Highway 5a on-ramp, just outside Merritt (truck fire scene)
