Check stop – Screening for impaired driving

On September 1, 2022 at 10:15 pm, Kitimat RCMP conducted a check stop to screen for impaired driving, documentation and other driving infractions. Approximately 70 cars passed through the check stop and two impaired drivers were detected which resulted one 12-hour driving suspension for a N driver for which there is zero alcohol tolerance, and one 90 - day driving prohibition for a driver who blew a Fail on the approved screening device. The vehicle of the driver who blew a Fail was also impounded for 30 days.

Missing man found slumbering

On September 2, 2022 at approximately 10:10 am Kitimat RCMP received a report of a missing person and that it was out of character for the person to not be reached. Terrace RCMP assisted Kitimat RCMP in locating the man around 12:00 pm who was safe and sound but had over-slept.

Unsafe driver

On September 3, 2022 at 12:00 pm Kitimat RCMP received a report of a driver driving at drastically inconsistent speeds that was heading toward Kitimat on Highway 37. The vehicle was located driving between 60km/hr-80 km/hr where the speed was still 100km/hr. The vehicle was also observed wavering in it’s lane, and took a long period of time to pullover. The driver was spoken to and not believed to be impaired by alcohol or drug, nor in medical distress but struggled to respond to police. The driver was able to go on his way after the interaction and a request for review of medical fitness to drive was sent to Road safety BC.

Prohibited driver arrested, vehicle towed

September 4, 2022 at 10:19 pm a Kitimat RCMP officer conducting patrols noted a young woman driving a vehicle who he believed was a prohibited driver. The Officer pulled the vehicle over and confirmed the identity of the driver, also confirming they were prohibited from driving. The woman was detained for prohibited driving and was released with a date to attend court. The vehicle was also towed and impounded.

Camper call

September 5, 2022 at 9:00 pm Kitimat RCMP were advised of someone camping beside the Kitimat River near the Haisla bridge. The camper was located and advised of the bylaw that prevents campers from being directly beside the river outside of the designated campground. The camper agreed to relocate his camp and when checked later on had vacated.

Man causing mischief tries to pick fights

September 6, 2022 at 01:01 am Kitimat RCMP responded to a call where an unknown shirtless man was attempting to fight a number of people. Police attended and arrested the man and were able to confirm his identity after locating his personal identification card. The man had two outstanding arrest warrants which he was also arrested for. Police transported the intoxicated man to Kitimat RCMP cells. He was later released when he was able to care for himself with a date to attend court.

Dangerous driving leads to collision

September 8, 2022 at 07:55 am Kitimat RCMP were notified of a single motor vehicle incident on Kitamaat Village Road. Police attended and noted one vehicle in the ditch and that on scene Firefighters were in the process of extricating the driver. A second involved vehicle and driver was also discovered who had received minimal damage to their vehicle. Police were informed that Driver one was said to have passed Driver two going uphill on a solid yellow line where no passing was permitted, hitting the side of Driver two’s vehicle and then bouncing off sideways into the ditch. Driver one was transported to hospital for non-life threatening injuries and Driver two received no injury. The investigation is ongoing.

Kitimat RCMP would like to remind all drivers to obey posted speed and other traffic signs and laws as you are not only causing unnecessary risk to yourself but those around you. If you have concerns about observed dangerous driving, please call Police when you are safe to do so.
