Speed enforcement is on the rise

Mounties have teamed up with Cowichan Community Policing and Engagement Society to enforce speed limits and educate drivers of their actual speeds in the Cowichan Valley.

Volunteers from the Cowichan Community Policing and Engagement Society (CCP&ES) are out on the roads around the Cowichan Valley conducting Speed Watch, educating & reminding drivers of their speed and to drive safely. Volunteers will be keeping a close eye on drivers who exceed the limits. Using a radar unit and large electronic display, motorists will be reminded of how fast they are travelling and if they exceed the lawful speed limit. Volunteers will deploy in school zones, playgrounds and high collision zones reminding motorists to slow down.

Speed is a major contributing factor in fatal car crashes in B.C. states Colleen Woodger, ICBC Road Safety & Community Coordinator. Small changes in speed can make a big difference. North Cowichan/Duncan Police officers will be out looking for speeders and distracted or impaired drivers this summer. We really appreciate our partners at ICBC and the volunteers from CCP&ES who work on improving road safety in the community said Sergeant Trevor Busch of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

Cowichan Community Policing and Engagement Society is a non-profit, charitable society that provides valuable crime prevention and community safety programs. They are currently looking for additional volunteers to help in various programs. CCP&ES has three offices in the North Cowichan area, located on #5 2628 Beverly Street in Duncan; 1721E Cowichan Bay Road and will soon open a third office in Lower Level 102-9799 Waterwheel Crescent, Chemainus. Our goal is to have these offices open 5 days a week, which is why we are reaching out to our communities to support us through volunteering, all training is provided.
