File # 18-3218

On March 13 2018 the Port Alberni RCMP began an investigation into the death of Dontay Lucas, after first responders were notified of a 6 year old boy in medical distress. Hours later Dontay was pronounced dead.

From that point officers with the General Investigative Section were assisted by both plainclothes and uniformed officers to carry out an investigation into how young Dontay died.

We understand and appreciate the continued cries for answers from the public, and Dontay’s family as we turned every stone and followed every investigational avenue. Officers have reviewed hours of video, spoken with dozens of witnesses, reviewed cell phone data and reports from outside agencies.

In order to ensure that officers were ready to have this matter before the courts immediately, painstaking efforts were made to ensure every piece of evidence has been disclosed to the BC Prosecution Service and that the investigation is ready to stand trial.

Due to the tireless efforts of investigators, on Friday May 6 the Port Alberni RCMP arrested Dontay’s mother, Rykel Frank nee Charleson and her now husband Mitchell Frank and charges were approved for the first degree murder of Dontay Lucas.

Both have been held in police custody and were placed before a Judge for a bail hearing. Both Ms Frank and Mr Frank were remanded in custody for a later trial date.
