File # 2021-9674

Pitt Meadows, B.C – Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a tragic incident where a man was struck by a dump truck and has sadly passed away.

On Saturday, May 15, 2021 at around 2:00 pm, police responded to numerous calls regarding a pedestrian struck by a dump truck at the intersection of Harris Road and Airport Way. Initial reports indicated that a man was walking his bicycle at or near the crosswalk area. Multiple witness accounts stated that traffic had yielded the right of way to oncoming emergency vehicles en-route to an unrelated incident. After emergency vehicles had cleared the area a dump truck started through the roundabout intersection when the wheel of the bicycle belonging to the man was clipped, knocking the man to the ground. Despite the efforts of an off-duty fireman and the responding BC Emergency Health Services, the man, a 49-year-old Coquitlam resident, tragically died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Roads were closed to assist the investigation and the RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) have attended the scene. The Dump Truck operator is cooperating with police and impaired driving or speeding is not believed to be factors.

The investigation is continuing.
