The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Kelowna where one man was injured.
On October 18, Kelowna RCMP received a report of multiple shots fired. The suspect had departed the scene but subsequent reports of a man with a gun in a vehicle were received.
A short time later the West Kelowna Fire Department reported that a vehicle had crashed in West Kelowna and that when they arrived a man exited the vehicle and they saw a gun.
When West Kelowna RCMP arrived, the vehicle was unoccupied but the suspect was located a short distance away.
The Southeast District Emergency Response Team and a Negotiator were called but the man would reportedly not comply with directions. An interaction between the man and police occurred which resulted in the man being injured.
Medical treatment was provided and the man was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
The Kelowna RCMP Serious Crime Unit is conducting a parallel investigation into the events preceding the interaction with police.
Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca.
