BC RCMP notify the IIO BC of an incident in Tofino

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Tofino that resulted in one man being shot and killed.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on February 27, 2021, two officers from Tofino RCMP attended a residence on the Opitsaht First Nation to locate a woman in distress. When they arrived an interaction took place and one male was shot and another was taken into custody.

The woman was located and taken to hospital for medical assessment. No one else was injured during the incident.

Vancouver Island General Investigative Section (GIS) is investigating the initial call including allegations that the woman was being held against her will. A male remains in police custody.

The IIO BC has been notified and will be attending the scene today. The IIO BC is investigating the fatal police involved shooting.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police at this time. Anyone with any information is asked to call police.
