Training

The 9-1-1 Police Dispatch Training Program is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to become a 9-1-1 Police Dispatcher. The Training Program consists of two parts: Call Taking and Dispatching. During training, you will receive a full-time salary and benefits. The training takes approximately 9-12 months to complete.

Part 1: Call Taking Training

Call Taking training is comprised of 3 weeks of classroom theory, life-like scenarios and simulations. Training is delivered by our Technical Trainers at PRTC. The training is interactive and intensive and is designed to replicate the live environment that you will return to for Field Coaching.

Following the Call Taking training at PRTC, you will begin to take calls at your 9-1-1 Police Dispatch Centre. You will be assigned a Field Coach who will guide and evaluate you throughout your continued training.

At first, your Field Coach will work alongside you. As your skills develop over the next 12 weeks, you will begin to work more independently. Your performance will be monitored, assessed and evaluated as you progress through Field Coaching. You will be required to complete a Call Taking proficiency evaluation in order to progress to the next phase of training: Dispatching.

Part 2: Dispatch Training

Dispatch training is comprised of 2 weeks of classroom theory, life-like scenarios and simulations. Training is delivered at PRTC by our Technical Trainers.

Following the Dispatch training at PRTC, you will return to your 9-1-1 Police Dispatch Centre where you will exercise your newly acquired dispatch skills in the live environment while working alongside your Field Coach. During the next 12 weeks, your Field Coach will continually support and guide you with integrating your Call Taking skills with your newly learned Dispatch skills.
