The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 383 calls for service from Friday July 19, to 9 a.m. on Monday July 22, 2024. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Downtown fires: man arrested

A brief foot pursuit ended with a suspect being taken into custody Friday afternoon, following a report of a man starting fires.

On Friday July 19, 2024, around 5:35 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to the area of 4th Avenue and Nicola Street, where a man was reported to have lit the grass on fire and walked away. Police located the suspect as he was allegedly lighting two more fires. Multiple officers attended with fire extinguishers and battled the flames. The suspect was arrested following a foot pursuit.

He was assessed by the Integrated Crisis Response Team, then released from custody with a court date and conditions. Charge recommendations are anticipated as part of the assessment and approval process.

Stolen motorcycle recovered

Police returned a stolen vehicle to its owner after receiving reports of a suspicious motorcycle abandoned in a bush.

On Sunday July 21, 2024, around 6:30 a.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to a pathway between Westgate Street and Bossert Avenue, where a multi-colour motorcycle was located. Police contacted the registered owner, who only lived a couple of blocks away, and was unaware it had been taken since he saw it last around 9 p.m. the night before.

Downtown assault

Kamloops police are investigating an assault report near Seymour Street received early Monday morning.

On July 22, 2024, around 1:50 a.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to a commercial location on the 600-block of Seymour Street for a report of a man observed with obvious wounds. Police located the person in the alleyway near Seymour and Victoria Street and began first aid. He was transported to hospital by ambulance and treated for injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

Stolen truck recovered

After the driver of a stolen truck twice fled from Kamloops police, the vehicle was located abandoned on Ord Road.

On July 22, 2024, around 2:55 a.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were patrolling the North Shore when they observed a 1990s red Nissan Frontier pickup truck on Tranquille Road, which had been reported stolen on June 30, from an address on Wilson Street. The driver of the vehicle allegedly failed to stop for police officers who attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle had also been involved in a flight from police investigation the day before.

Around 3:15 a.m., police located the truck with its lights on and engine running, parked behind a residence on the 1500-block of Ord Road; no one was inside. The vehicle was seized for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Arrests made in bike theft investigation

Two people were taken into custody in separate bike theft reports this weekend.

On Saturday July 20, 2024, around 8:40 p.m., the Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) responded to a report of a bike theft in progress at 12th and Battle Street. A Penticton man was arrested and transported to cells. Shortly after, around 10 p.m., the CRU arrested a Kamloops man who was allegedly attempting to steal a bike in Valleyview.

Both men were later released without process as part of the ongoing investigation, with charge recommendations anticipated as part of the assessment process.
