Surrey RCMP recently assisted the Surrey Fire Department for two fatal residential fires, one which occurred in Whalley and the second in Newton.

On July 20, 2024, at approximately 8:00 pm Surrey RCMP responded to a single-home residential fire in the 13600 block of 112A Ave, Whalley. Surrey RCMP frontline officers were called to the scene after an 85-year-old woman was found deceased. The fire was determined to be isolated to an upper floor room where the woman was located. The Surrey Fire Inspector has deemed the fire as not being suspicious. BC Coroner’s Service has taken conduct to determine the cause of death.

On July 23, 2024, at approximately 2:00 am Surrey RCMP responded to a fully engulfed single residence home in the 13600 block of 56B Avenue, Newton. Police were advised that a 73-year-old woman had escaped from the residence and was taken to hospital; unfortunately, a 77-year-old man did not make it out of the fire. Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit briefly took conduct of the investigation and the Surrey Fire Inspector has determined the fire as not suspicious. BC Coroner’s Service is now working to determine to investigate the death.

Surrey RCMP offers our sincerest condolences to the friends and families of both of the deceased.
