Grizzly bear

On June 14th 2024 at 10:55am, Kitimat RCMP received a report of a grizzly bear in a backyard on Capilano Street, Kitimat, BC. Police attended and spoke with the complainant who advised there was a grizzly bear in his backyard, eating dog food. The complainant reported the grizzly bear bluffed charged at him and his dog earlier that same day. Police observed the bear eating the dog food, the bear was not scared of humans and did not run away. Police consulted with a partner agency who ultimately decided the bear had to be dispatched and authorized RCMP permission to do so.

Two vehicle collision

On June 15, 2024 at 5:00pm, Kitimat RCMP were conducting patrols and were flagged down by a motorist stating that there was a collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Lahakas and Haisla Blvd. Police attended and learned that a vehicle was travelling northbound on Lahakas Blvd and another vehicle was turning left at Haisla Blvd. The collision occurred during a yellow light. No injuries were reported and minor damage to both vehicles.

Robbery

On June 15 2024 at 10:14pm, Kitimat RCMP received a report of a robbery. The victim reported that an unknown male approached him, using a knife, slashed his jacket and subsequently took his wallet, cash and cell phone. This occurred near Gannet Crescent / Gyrfalcon Avenue, Kitimat BC. The suspect is described as a 5'10 - 6' tall Indigenous male, age ~25 years, with facial hair including a moustache, medium build with black pants, black shoes, black toque, a possible grey hoodie, and smelled of liquor. Police attended and conducted patrols of the area, but could not locate the suspect male. The police investigation is ongoing. Check well being

On June 16 2024 at 9:14pm Kitimat RCMP received a request to check the well being of a person who was not responding to any text messages from family or friends, also forgetting important medication while on a work assignment. Police attended the person’s residence and was able to make contact. The person stated that they were able to secure more medication and was just resting from the work block.

Dirt bike on pathways

On June 17 2024 at 5:34pm, Kitimat RCMP received a report of a dirt bike speeding on the pathways near Albatross Ave. Police were able to observe a Caucasian male operating a red dirt bike with no licence plate, driving on the grass toward Albatross Ave and then rip down the pathway toward Gyrfalcon Ave. Police lost visual contact, however conducted patrols in the area with negative results.

Children in vehicle

On June 18 2024, at approximately 5:16pm, Kitimat RCMP received a report of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot on the 900 block of Wakashan Ave, Kitimat BC. The complainant reported seeing a vehicle left unattended with children in it and one child was running around outside. The complainant was concerned as it was quite warm that day and the vehicle was not running. Police attended the area immediately and the vehicle was gone. Police conducted patrols and was able to locate the vehicle and confirmed the well being of the occupants, who appeared to be well cared for. This is a good reminder with the summer days quickly approaching that the temperature in the vehicles increases quickly, making it unsafe for children and animals.

Loud music

On June 19 2024, at approximately 11:03pm, Kitimat RCMP received a noise complaint on Oriole St, Kitimat BC. The complainant was reporting loud music at the house behind theirs. Police attended, located the residence in question and heard the loud music. People in backyard were spoken to and told to turn music down or off as there is a 24hr noise bylaw. Just a reminder to all Kitimat residents, there is a 24-hour noise bylaw. Please familiarize yourself and be a thoughtful neighbour and don’t receive an unexpected visit from our officers!!
