Trail RCMP recover a stolen vehicle, trailer, and boat

File # 2024-2121

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 6:17 a.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received information which lead to the recovery of a stolen truck, camping trailer, and boat discovered parked on a highway runaway lane in the 1300 block of Schofield Highway, in Warfield, BC.

The officer attended and confirmed all three items had been recently stolen from local residences. The RCMP Forensic Identification Service was contacted and attended the scene to conduct a forensic examination. The owners were contacted and had their vehicles returned.

The matter remains under criminal investigation.

Please lock your vehicles and secure your keys in a safe place. Do your best to secure your recreational vehicles as they are often easier to target and steal due to their portability. Make sure to record all of your vehicle identification numbers. This may help police recover your items if stolen, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Wig out ends in bad hair day

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., frontline Trail and Greater District officers responded to a single motor vehicle incident in the 1700 block of Green Road, in Fruitvale, BC.

A witness allegedly observed 28-year-old Nelson woman driving a black truck speed passed his vehicle on Green Road before losing control and crashing into a cement barricade, ending up down a wooded embankment. BC EHS attended the scene; however, the woman declined medical treatment. Attending officers tried to convince the woman allow BC EHS to treat her injuries but were not successful in persuading her.

While at the scene, officers made observations that lead them to believe the woman’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. A demand was read to the woman, who refused to provide a sample of her breath. The officers arrested the woman as she allegedly began to escalate in her behaviour toward the police. The woman spat on an officer and threw an Approved Screening Device at him while uttering threats. The officers took the woman into custody after a brief struggle. The woman was transported to the Trail Detachment.

While being lodged into the Trail Detachment cellblock, the woman allegedly attempted to liberated one hair extension off her head to use be as a improvised hairy nun-chuck against an officer. Officers prevented her from taking this action. The woman was held in custody until sober. She was released and issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under Section 215 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act. The truck was returned to the owner.

This matter remains under criminal investigation.

It was definitely a hair-ried experience for the officers who had to manage this woman, says Sgt. Wicentowich, Trail RCMP will be continuing to target impaired drivers in an effort to keep our roads safe.

Wrong way on the highway leads to impaired investigation

On Friday, May 31, 2024, at 8:20 p.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting a routine patrol when he spotted a 47-year-old Rossland man driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the highway in the 1300 block of Highway 3B, in Warfield, BC. The officer detained the man and his vehicle roadside.

The officer made observations that lead him to believe the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. A demand was read to the man, who provided a sample of his breath roadside that resulted in a fail.

The 47-year-old Rossland man was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under Section 215 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act and had his vehicle impounded for up to 30 days.

Trail man caught for driving while prohibited, vehicle seized

On Friday, May 31, 2024, at 9:55 p.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District officer was conducted a routine patrol when she observed a 53-year-old Trail man driving a vehicle while prohibited under Section 95 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act near the intersection of Robertson Street and Third Avenue, in Trail, BC. The officer detained the man and vehicle roadside.

The officer arrested the man. A search of the vehicle located a small amount of substance believed to be drugs. His vehicle was impounded for up to 7 days.

The 47-year-old Trail man was released on an Appearance Notice and will make his first appearance on July 18, 2024, in Provincial Court, in Rossland, BC.

You don’t make friends with salad

On Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 7:15 p.m., frontline Trail and District RCMP officers, and a BC Highway Patrol officer, received a report about a vehicle swerving back and forth on the road on Highway 22B, near Genelle, BC. The officers located the vehicle and detain it roadside.

The officer spoke to the 18-year-old South Slocan woman driving the vehicle. She reportedly admitted to eating a bowl salad while driving, resulting in swerving all over the road. The woman warned for about her distracted driving.

In this case, salad could be bad for you, if you cause a crash. Any kind of activity that distracts you from driving can be considered distracted driving, and a hefty fine can be issued, says Sgt. Wicentowich.

Bear breaks into a Rossland residence, scares family

File # 2024-2203

On June 2, 2024, at 12:52 a.m. frontline Trail and Greater District officers received a report from a homeowner that a bear was breaking into her residence in the 1400 block of Columbia Avenue, in Rossland, BC. The woman, her children, and a dog locked themselves in an upstairs room until police could arrive at the scene.

When the officers arrived, one officer had to force open the front door which freed the bear that ended up trapped inside the residence. No one was injured in this incident but the family was very shaken up.

The family did the right thing at the right time by calling the police and sheltering in place. This was a scary incident for them as it would be for anyone. The BC Conservation Office Service was notified about the incident and hopefully will follow up with the family. Please secure all of your garbage and potential food sources to help prevent incidents like this from occurring, says Sgt. Wicentowich
