Victoria Day long weekend recap

This past Victoria Day long weekend, the Chilliwack RCMP responded to 421 calls for service between May 17 at 4:00 am and May 21 at 4:00 am.

2024-20394

On May 20, 2024 at 9:20 pm the Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of gunshots heard in the Majuba Hill area. Police were quick to flood the area. After extensive inquiries with local residents, it was determined that the noises heard were in fact fireworks. This serves as a reminder that the use of consumer fireworks and firecrackers is illegal within the City of Chilliwack.

2024-20314

On May 20, 2024 at 12:01 pm two males were observed openly consuming illicit drugs on a sidewalk in the Chilliwack downtown area. The two males were approached by police and arrested under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. A subsequent search of the males located two replica firearms which were seized by police. The males have been compelled to attend court at a later date with charges being recommended for Crown’s consideration.

2024-20196

On May 19, 2024 at 4:25 pm a hiker contacted the Chilliwack RCMP to report being lost with his friends on Vedder Mountain. Police made attempts to contact the hiker which was unsuccessful due to poor cellular reception. Chilliwack Search and Rescue was deployed and able to map the lost hiker on a cellular device. As a result, the hikers were successfully located uninjured and safely brought back to their vehicle. Thank you to Search and Rescue who is an invaluable part of emergency services in the Fraser Valley.

2024-20121

On May 18, 2024 at the Chilliwack RCMP were called to the Landing Leisure Centre for a male who had brandished a firearm to a group of youths. Police arrived and a large gathering of youth began to scatter in all directions. Police were able to speak to a few of the youth, one who had been bear sprayed. After speaking with witnesses, it was determined that no firearm was involved. After further investigation several cans of bear spray were located in the area and seized by police for destruction. The appearance of the bear spray was similar to that of a firearm which lead to the initial report. The group of youth were sent home as police were unable to obtain information from the youth that would identify the male assailant.

2024-20029

On May 18, 2024 at 1:51 pm the Chilliwack RCMP responded to a weapon’s call near Promontory where a motorcycle was observed travelling on the roadway with a rifle attached to the handlebars. Police were able to locate the motorcycle at a residence nearby and speak with the registered owner who was cooperative with police. Police inspected the rifle and determined it was an unloaded airsoft gun. Both the motorcycle and replica firearm were World War 2 historical artifacts. It was determined that no criminal offence had been committed, just a concerned citizen erring on the side of caution and calling the police.

2024-19833

On May 17th, 2024 at 12:30 pm an observant Chilliwack RCMP officer was travelling on Vedder Road in the Sardis area when they observed a male walking suspiciously with two flat screen televisions in his hands. The officer recognized the male as he is known to police in Chilliwack. A police query on the male revealed an outstanding warrant for Theft Under $5000.00. The male was subsequently arrested and held in custody pending a bail hearing. Police were unable to determine the origin of the televisions.

2024-19913

On May 17, 2024 at 8:30 pm the Chilliwack RCMP Seasonal Policing Team was patrolling Cultus Lake when they observed a vehicle whose driver did not match the description of the registered owner. A roadside stop was conducted and the male driver was identified by police. It was quickly learned the male was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle and he was subsequently arrested. Additionally, small amounts of illicit drugs were located on the male. The vehicle was impounded and the male will be attending court at a later date.

• 6 Immediate Roadside Prohibitions were issued
• 3 Twenty-Four hour prohibitions for issued for drug use
• 1 Criminal Code Impaired investigation was conducted following a collision
• 3 Vehicles were impounded for Excessive Speeding
• 2 prohibited driving arrests were made
