Pitt Meadows, B.C. – Ridge Meadows RCMP is investigating a motor vehicle incident that resulted in the death of a cyclist.

On October 18, 2023, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP frontline members responded to a report of a 12-year-old child being struck by a recycling truck at the corner of 116A Avenue and 196B Street. The child was cycling to school when the recycling truck struck the child.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue Service (PMFRS) attended the scene and performed life-saving measures, however, the child was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The recycling truck remained at the scene and the driver is cooperating with police. Impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor at this time.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) and the Integrated Collison Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) also attended the scene of the collision. Ridge Meadows RCMP SCU has conduct of the investigation.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families of everyone involved, states Inspector Martin Guay. This is a tragic and devastating loss for our community.

This is currently an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.
