File # 2023-1022

On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Vanderhoof RCMP were called to North Country Inn on Burrard Street in the community. An adult man, reported to be intoxicated, had threatened the staff with a knife.

The man had been heard yelling at people in the parking lot from his room door. Staff had told him to go back in his room, which he did at first, but was then heard yelling at people again. When told to go back in his room again, this time the man approached the staff member brandishing a knife, pointing it at the staff member.

When police arrived, the suspect pointed the knife at the police officer and would not comply with the officer’s demands. Police made continuous attempts to de-escalate the situation while establishing containment until other officers, including a negotiator arrived.

The negotiator made multiple attempts to have the man drop the knife, but he would not comply with police direction. He made numerous trips in and out of his room, while walking towards the police pointing the knife at them.

The man continued to disobey police direction, walked towards police with the knife, and with everyone’s safety in mind, police safely deployed the Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). The man was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment and later released from hospital to police custody for a bail hearing on April 26, 2023.

This situation could have ended much differently. The safety of everyone is our priority and thankfully no innocent people were injured Said Cpl Jeffrey Lance, Vanderhoof RCMP.
