File # 2017-38427

The Nanaimo RCMP is wishes to advise the public that theft from vehicles is up 57 percent from this time last year with the trend expected to increase throughout the Holiday Season.

Thieves will steal anything in plain view. They will break windows, punch out door locks and do significant damage to take as little as one loonie. We also hear very sad stories of sentimental items being stolen from vehicles. Thieves don't care and will simply dispose of priceless family heir looms in the garbage if it cannot be redeemed for cash or drugs, said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The public needs to be aware that thieves will target busy parking lots so they can go about their business unnoticed. They will wait for an unsuspecting driver to park their vehicle and within minutes it is broken into. The preferred items are small and easily concealed such as electronics, cell phones, perfume, makeup, sunglasses, clothing and of course wallets.
