A fight outside a local senior secondary school yesterday afternoon between two female students resulted in the arrest of a 14 year old male for Assaulting a Police Officer and Obstruction. The youth, age 14, was later released to the care of his parents. The incident began at approximately 3 pm on Monday October 30th in the parking lot of a Norwell Drive business and adjacent to a local high school. The two female students were later turned over to their parents.
It all began when a nearby police officer witnessed a crowd of upwards of 40-50 youths gathering in the parking lot of the business. A fight soon broke out between two females and when the officer intervened he was obstructed by the 14 year old male. In doing so, the officer and youth received minor injuries. Minutes later several other police officers arrived on scene and broke up the fight and dispersed the crowd.
Investigators determined the fight between the two females was consensual and one of the female combatants attended a different school, as did the 14 year old male. Senior administration officials with both schools have been apprised of the situation and will be addressing the behaviour of the youths involved.
As with most school based fights this attracted a large crowd which undoubtedly fuelled the behaviour of the youths involved. Nanaimo RCMP School Liaison officers from the respective schools will also be following up with the participants to ensure there is no further escalation of hostilities, said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
