A medical incident ends with a car and driver in the water

On Monday May 1, 2023 at approximately 5:30 pm the Port Alberni RCMP responded to a collision that had just occurred on Gertrude St at Roger Creek where a vehicle had reportedly entered the water.

Officers found the car in several feet of water in the Roger Creek just below the bridge and Port Alberni Fire Department were tending to the driver, luckily no one else was still trapped in the vehicle.

Through their investigation, Front Line officers determined the driver had experienced a medical event and pulled over near the bridge, in the next few seconds the vehicle continued over the embankment and into the water. The three youth passengers were able to escape the car before it entered the creek. Surprisingly no one sustained serious injuries from the collision.

To the luck of the driver, a good samaritan that happened to be driving by jumped into the waist deep water and pulled the driver to shore.

The selfless acts that were displayed by those who stopped to help show what our small town is about stated Constable Richard Johns.

All of the occupants were treated by BC EHS before being transported to a nearby hospital for further assessment.

The Port Alberni RCMP were in contact with the Ministry of Environment to ensure the protection of the waters and it appears there were no fluids spilled into the creek following this collision.
