File # 2023-10157

On Monday, December 25, 2023 shortly before 12:30 pm, Williams Lake RCMP responded to a call from members of the public regarding an unsafe discharge of a firearm.

It was reported that someone was discharging a firearm on Bysak Road near Hodgson Road. This area has clearly marked hiking trails and numerous people were walking in the area at the time were alarmed when they heard shots being fired very close to them.

Police made extensive patrols in the area but could not locate anyone who may have been in the area shooting a firearm. We believe this was likely someone target practicing and not shooting at someone.

The Williams Lake RCMP would like to remind the public about the safe handling and use of firearms. If you wish to take part in target shooting, a safe option would be to attend a designated gun range, where there are safety measures in place to prevent possible injuries. Always be aware of your surroundings.

Be sure to have a valid Possession and Acquisitions License (PAL) and learn about firearms safety practices. It is an offence under the Criminal Code, to carelessly use, store, handle or transport a firearm.
