Daring rescues, dangerous encounters, dogged determination, and dedication to those less fortunate.
On Wednesday, June 8, 2016 the Surrey RCMP’s Officer in Charge held his annual awards ceremony where heroic actions and outstanding service to the community were honoured.
Every year, we take the time to celebrate the men and women who have demonstrated tremendous heroism and outstanding service to our community, says Surrey RCMP Officer in Charge, Assistant Commissioner Bill Fordy.
This is an opportunity to highlight the excellent work being done by those in our detachment and in our community who are making this city a great place to live, work, and play.
One hundred and fifty six awards were presented to officers, support staff, and civilians for their efforts including:
- Two officers who rescued a suicidal youth who was hanging precariously upside down from a bridge;
- An Auxiliary Constable who apprehended a suspect after a violent stabbing on a public bus;
- Two municipal employees who spotted someone switching license plates in a parking lot, leading to the arrest of a bank robber; and
- An officer who spends his time off driving to Mexico and back to build houses and schools with a volunteer organization.
Many of the efforts being recognized involved helping those who are vulnerable or marginalized in our community, says Assistant Commissioner Fordy.
Our officers, staff, and community partners are on the front lines every day helping those who don’t have a voice and are in need of our assistance.
Civilians were also honoured on Wednesday evening including one civilian who bravely intervened during a robbery and assault of an elderly female. The civilian came to the victim’s aid and attempted to pull the suspect out of the victim’s vehicle. In an attempt to flee with the stolen vehicle, the suspect ran over the civilian with the front tire of the vehicle, launching him forward, which could have gravely injured him. Due to the civilian’s quick-thinking and selfless act, the suspect was quickly tracked down by police and arrested before he could create any further risk to the public.
