Missing adult male swimmer - Fraser River - Surrey

On June 4th, 2016 at 0250 AM Surrey RCMP received a report of a missing swimmer in the Fraser River. A group of adult males were on the beach located at 11931 Old Yale Road. The group had started a bonfire and were consuming alcoholic beverages, when the decision was made to jump into the cold swift moving waters of the Fraser River and attempt to swim around the Skytrain bridge pillar and back to shore.

One of the males, a 32-year-old Burnaby man was seen going under the water and did not resurface. The group of males proceeded to look for the man, however, were not able to locate him.

Surrey RCMP attended and began a co-ordinated water search with the assistance of Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard. After several hours of searching and not locating the male, the tough decision was made to call off the search.

The name of the male is not being released by police as they are still in the process of notifying family of the event. Police do not suspect foul play and this point in the investigation.
