Speed Watch volunteers re-united with their trailer on 128 Ave.

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s volunteers are back in business using their digital speed reader trailer to educate drivers about the dangers of high risk driving habits.

In 2008 the Ridge Meadows RCMP had a custom digital speed reader trailer built as part of the Speed Watch program. It was used extensively by volunteers throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as a tool to raise drivers’ awareness about their speed relevant to posted speed limits.

Last year, the digital display malfunctioned and the volunteers jumped into action in an attempt to save this one of a kind tool. They consulted Sergeant Gresiuk, Professor Gill, student Chelsea Gill, and BCIT Dean Dr. Forrest Tittlewith local shops but the repair bills were too costly and it appeared the trailer was headed for the salvage yard.

As a last resort, the Crime Prevention Coordinator contacted BCIT’s School of Energy Faculty & Program Head for the Telecommunications and Networks program, Mr. Bob Gill, who was happy to help. The RCMP volunteers worked with Mr. Gill and a student to develop a plan and BCIT took over the high frequency equipment and board level repairs as one of their community outreach projects.

Bob Gill said, All of BCIT’s programs are where Professor Gill tests the speed reader board.the ‘Rubber Meets the Road’, which is definitely the case here. Industry partnerships are key to the BCIT experience, and our student Chelsea got some excellent hands-on experience with a piece of technology that will directly impact the community.

The power of volunteerism is inspiring, says Sergeant Brenda Gresiuk. It is remarkable what can be accomplished when people join forces for the betterment of a community. This was a great partnership with a wonderful outcome, big thank you to all involved!
