There is nothing like a second set of eyes to spot problems. In our goal to enhance road safety and reduce crime, a specially equipped police vehicle is currently assisting our Road Safety Unit and frontline officers. This vehicle is equipped with ALPR or Automated Licence Plate Recognition technology and acts as the second set of eyes.

A specially trained officer is required to operate the technology, which consists of specialized software and multiple infrared cameras. The ALPR system has the ability to read licence plates accurately even under challenging situations – such as non-standard heights, like on commercial tractor trailer, highly contrasting light situations, and even those that are obscured by mud. Up to 3000 licence plates can be read and interpreted per hour.

This is several orders of magnitude faster than any police officer could input the data into a computer.

Richmond RCMP has seen an increase in the number of uninsured vehicles on our roadways recently and this technology can help quickly identify these vehicles. ALPR technology has also assisted in identify unlicensed drivers, suspended drivers, prohibited drivers and licence plates associated to individuals with arrest warrants.

Individuals operating a vehicle without a valid drivers’ licence pose a risk to all road users who are operating within the confines of the BC Motor Vehicle Act, says Staff Sergeant Paula Maan NCO In-charge of Operations Support, We are committed to road safety and keeping Richmond road users safe. The ALPR is an example of one of many initiatives our Road Safety Unit are utilizing throughout the month.

Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit will be continuing to conduct enforcement throughout the City of Richmond.
