A North Vancouver resident was served a traffic ticket after a bee allegedly caused her to drive onto the sidewalk and strike a telephone pole on Capilano Rd. at Mt. Crown Rd. in North Vancouver.

The collision occurred on September 5th, 2017 at around noon. When the North Vancouver RCMP arrived on scene, they determined the vehicle to have been driving northbound on Capilano Rd. when the driver lost control and drove onto the sidewalk. The vehicle, an older model Pontiac Sunfire, then side-swiped a telephone pole and jumped back onto the road before finally coming to a stop a good distance away. Long skid marks were left by the vehicle’s tires which led the investigator to believe the driver was exceeding the speed limit at the time she lost control. Fortunately, no one was injured and there were no pedestrians on the sidewalk at the time of the collision.

When questioned on scene by the investigator, the driver of the vehicle said she lost control when a bee entered her vehicle. The driver was not stung and the bee had escaped. The investigator was unable to confirm the validity of the driver's story.

With North Vancouver being so close to the forests and mountains, nature often finds its way onto our roadways, said Constable Brett Cunningham of the North Vancouver RCMP Detachment. For this reason, we need to be diligent when encountering small or large animals and even insects like bees. To protect ourselves and the wildlife, do not take unsafe evasive action. Serious collisions can occur when drivers lose control.

The female North Vancouver resident has since been charged with Drive Without Consideration, S.144(1)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Act. This offence carries a penalty of $196 fine and 6 points to her licence.
