Welcome to the Mission RCMP Community Connection for the week of January 1 - 7, 2024

Here’s a snapshot of some of the work we did last week:

Calls of interest:

A robbery occurred at a gas station on Logan Avenue on the morning of January 7. An employee reported that a female had walked behind the counter and threatened to kill him before taking money from the cash register. Mission RCMP officers quickly arrived and spoke with the employee, whom had not been injured. The employee reported that he believed the female was still somewhere inside the store. Police searched the building and located the female hiding in an upstairs office. She was arrested without incident and the money was recovered. The 36-year-old woman is now facing charges of robbery and uttering threats.

Around noon on January 5, two boys were walking along Strachan Street when they noticed a suitcase in the ditch. They opened the case and saw wires connected to what appeared to be an explosive device inside. The boys moved it to the middle of the yard, in case it went off. Mission RCMP officers attended and also confirmed the items inside the suitcase were suspicious. Some residences in the area were evacuated as a precaution while the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit attended and examined the item. Fortunately, they were able to confirm that it was not an explosive device. These boys did the right thing by notifying us, says Corporal Harrison Mohr with Mission RCMP. Just remember, if you have something that is, or may be an explosive device, please do not handle it or transport it anywhere. Stay back and call police immediately.

On January 4, CCTV footage at a residence on Hurd Street captured a man get out of a green four-door car, walk up to the front door of the residence, steal a package from outside the door, then leave in the car. Mission RCMP received a tip from someone that recognized the man, and officers were able to locate the offender and the car. The 21-year-old man was arrested, and the stolen package was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.

A significant police response was triggered on January 3, after a series of suspicious events at a local bank. Late in the evening, a panic alarm was received from the bank, after an incorrect alarm code was entered at the building. Around the same time, witnesses passing by the building saw what they described as a cube van parked outside, with a driver that appeared to have his hands in the air, and a passenger wearing a full face ski mask and a black toque. The truck then reportedly drove off at a high-rate of speed. Police contacted the armoured car company that had been scheduled to do a pick-up at that bank around that time, but their dispatch was unable to reach the armoured car guards, which raised further red flags that something was wrong. Finally, after repeated tries, the company was able to reach the driver, who confirmed everything was fine, and they had simply entered the wrong access code at the bank. The armoured-car passenger said she needed to wear a face mask and toque because of dust inside the bank. Officers still attended the bank and confirmed there was no indication of any foul play. Despite this turning out well, police appreciate the call from witnesses, and encourage the public to report any suspicious occurrences immediately.
