Mission RCMP are cautioning residents about a possible donations scam in Mission. Over the past week, two reports were received from people whom felt they had been victimized by a fraudster. Both complainants had seen a posting on a Facebook group, where a person claiming to be a single parent was asking for cash donations to use for their child’s birthday party. The complainants donated the money, but later saw the same request for help associated to multiple different accounts, all with slightly different names but with the same phone number. Corporal Harrison Mohr with Mission RCMP notes that, it’s great to see this sense of community and these acts of selfless charity, but be aware that there are some people whom will look to take advantage of a kind heart. Anyone who feels that they may have been scammed should call Mission RCMP.

Around 12:30 am on March 6, a break and enter occurred at a residence in the 7200 block of Wren Street. Fortunately, no one was home at the time. Three men entered the residence, but were only there for a few minutes before Mission RCMP arrived. All three fled down a nearby street, however officers were able to contain the area until a police dog arrived, which helped to locate the men hiding in some bushes nearby. All three were arrested without further incident, although Mission Fire and Rescue Services also attended to provide a ladder for assistance with accessing a steep embankment. One of the suspects had scampered down the embankment while trying to get away, but found that he was stuck there and could not get back up. The men aged 18, 22, and 25 – all of whom are known to police – are now facing charges including breaking and entering. Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area of Wren Street near Raven Street sometime after midnight on March 6, or saw an older black Ford F-350 pickup in the area is asked to call Mission RCMP, at 604-826-7161.

On the evening of March 6, staff at a restaurant along 1st Avenue called police after a man was yelling and swearing at staff, and refusing to pay his dinner bill. Mission RCMP arrived and immediately recognized the man as a prolific offender that sporadically comes to Mission, and has a history of similar incidents. The man, who has dozens of criminal convictions, was placed under arrest for causing a disturbance, but resisted arrest. Officers were eventually able to take the man into custody, and transported him to the Mission detachment. In the end, the man did not pay his bill, and is being investigated for charges including fraudulent obtaining food.

Three cell phones were stolen out of the locker rooms at the Mission Leisure Centre on the morning of March 8. The thefts occurred while the phone owners were out on the ice playing hockey. Mission RCMP are investigating the thefts. Anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to contact police. File 24-2691.

An officer driving along Hayward Street around 1 am on March 9 spotted an SUV travelling the opposite direction at a high rate of speed. The officer turned around to pull it over just in time to see it careen off the road into a ditch. The officer helped the driver out of the wreck, and in doing so, noted multiple signs of impairment by liquor. The driver failed a test on a roadside screening device, and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, as well as a 30-day vehicle impound. Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the man’s erratic driving.
