File # 2017-scam

Well, it seems to be that time of the year when fraudsters call alleging to be an officer from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Langley RCMP offers a caution and some information to assist you in not falling victim to a scam.

These individuals make contact and threaten in a variety of different ways. They may suggest the resident’s account is in arrears and the debt must be paid immediately or they will be arrested. They may leave a voicemail insisting on a call back and suggest the resident will be left to face the consequences. They may even suggest the resident may receive a refund or benefit.

Unfortunately, these calls come from prepaid cell phones and are not traceable.

The Canada Revenue Agency offers many helpful tips on avoiding scams on their website, Know How to Recognize a Scam. This is an excellent reference (a portion of which appears below) and readers are encouraged to visit their website for information on scams and much more!

If you call the CRA to request a form or a link for specific information, a CRA agent will forward the information you are requesting to your email during the telephone call. This is the only circumstance in which the CRA will send an email containing links.

If you do have a debt with the CRA and can't pay in full, take action right away. For more information, go to When you owe money – collections at the CRA.
